Prompt:
-Character Development
-List three new vocabulary words from your reading. What can you tell about hem from their structure?
Pages Read: 0-77
I am currently 77 pages into The Berlin Boxing Club and I am already very excited and interested. To say that Robert Sharenow's writing skills are simply, good, would be an understatement. Recently being introduced to Sharenow's writings I am still on the fence on how to describe his writing itself, besides impressive. Simply being 77 pages through a book makes it a difficult job to describe my thoughts on the book. In a simple way I can say that I do hold high expectations for the book.
Although I may simply be seventy seven pages through a four hundred page book, I have already met several interesting characters who in my opinion, are fantastic and incredibly realistic. The first character we are introduced to and probably my favorite would be Karl Stern. Stern to his peers, may seem inferior and weak, yet in truth, he is a very strong willed person. Sharenow efficiently manages to establish the disposition of Karl through every word (not literally) he uses.
Throughout the story I have encountered several words that I could not understand a couple of them were:
-guttural
-agnostic
-dissipated
These are words I do not believe heard before but for the word guttural I believe it may have some connection to the way something sounds. As for the word 'agnostic' I feel that it may have some time of relation to not having a specified religion. In the story Karl is referring to the fact that his father is atheist and his mother agnostic, which leads me to the conclusion that his mother is more than likely not religious due to his father's atheism. The word 'dissipated' leaves a negative connotation, without knowing the definition. When first reading the word it gives me the idea of someone who may be emotionally exhausted. This being due to the fact Karl refers to his father as, "drained and dissipated."
I'm really glad you're reading this book! I've already read it before and I loved it, when you mentioned it was 400 pages, I think about it know and it didn't feel like 400 pages because I loved it so much! Knowing how much you enjoy historical fiction, especially in WW2, I thought you already read it, but I guess not. I'm glad you're enjoying it!
ReplyDeleteI was always afraid to write upon the vocabulary prompt, as it seemed too simple. When I read your blog, I realized it could be transformed into a really interesting and entertaining post, impressive!
ReplyDeleteGreat blog post! I chose to read your blog this week, because it was very different and interesting from the others. I liked how said that, " These are words I do not believe heard before but for the word guttural I believe it may have some connection to the way something sounds. " Sometimes I think that way too about certain words. Overall good job!
