Does the title fit the story? Why or why not?
The setting of the The Watsons Go To Birmingham, is currently Michigan. This to me is actually a bit funny for the reason that the title is The Watsons Go To Birmingham. The way the place is described, you can tell that Michigan can be a very cold place during the winter. Kenneth's main struggles is having to deal with his mother trying to layer coat over coat on him during the wintry season. We also realize that Michigan is a very cold place due to the fact that in the beginning of the book Kenneth's older brother, Byron, manages to get his lips stuck on the rearview mirror of his father's car.
I have realized that not many people are fans of historical, but I have a never ending love for these types of readings. These being one of the reasons I have enjoyed The Watsons Go To Birmingham so much. Not only this but I also find several comparisons between my life and the main character, Kenneth. Kenneth seems to have a love-hate relationship (more hate than love) with his brother Byron. This would perfectly describe my relationship with my older brother. More than likely you will find us throwing witty remarks at each other about one's appearance or having what I like to call a "yelling match." It is the simple things such as how Kenneth reacts around others that helps me enjoy the story.
I feel that The Watsons Go To Birmingham is a very interesting title. Despite this fact I feel that The Watsons Go To Birmingham is not an adequate title for the book. There have been slight mentions of Birmingham, Alabama throughout the book, but the Watsons have not been to Birmingham, which is a bit confusing. Yet, without a doubt, I have decided to continue with the book and hope that I find out why the book is called, The Watsons Go To Birmingham.
I liked your blog this week. Also, most books don't really have titles that make sense at all or you have to had read a lot of it.
ReplyDeleteI finished this book last month and it was very great book. I think the author did a great job describing the life of his people during the Civil Rights Movement. It's interesting how you like this book a lot because you explained you true feeling through your writing. I enjoyed this book but you're in for a surprise at the end of the book. Great Blog Post.
ReplyDeleteNice blog. I like how you tied your self to the book when you were describing the love-hate relationship that Kenneth and Byron have.

You did a good job analyzing the title of the book and I thought it was cool that you mentioned it because I never really think about the meaning of the title to much.
